Have you ever stood up quickly and suddenly felt dizzy, lightheaded, or as though you might faint? While occasional lightheadedness is common, frequent episodes may indicate an underlying medical condition.
At Emcura Medical Clinic, we help patients identify the causes of dizziness and lightheadedness and determine when medical treatment is necessary.
One of the most common causes is orthostatic hypotension, a temporary drop in blood pressure when moving from sitting or lying down to standing.
Normally, your body adjusts quickly to maintain blood flow to your brain. When this adjustment is delayed or inadequate, you may experience dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, or a feeling that you might faint.
Other common causes include:
Dehydration: Not drinking enough fluids can lower blood volume and blood pressure.
Low blood pressure: Some people naturally have lower blood pressure or experience sudden drops when standing.
Medications: Blood pressure medications, diuretics, and certain antidepressants may contribute to dizziness.
Anemia: Low red blood cell levels can cause fatigue, weakness, and lightheadedness.
Low blood sugar: Skipping meals or taking certain diabetes medications may cause dizziness.
Heart conditions: Abnormal heart rhythms or other cardiovascular problems can sometimes cause lightheadedness.
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): A condition involving an excessive increase in heart rate when standing, often accompanied by dizziness, fatigue, or palpitations.
Occasional mild lightheadedness that resolves quickly may not be serious. However, you should seek medical evaluation if you experience:
Frequent or worsening dizziness
Feeling faint whenever you stand
Unusual fatigue or weakness
Heart palpitations
Repeated episodes of near-fainting
Symptoms after starting a new medication
Seek emergency medical attention if lightheadedness occurs with chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting during exertion, sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, or a severe sudden headache.
Your healthcare provider may perform a physical examination, review your medications, and check your blood pressure and heart rate while lying down and standing.
Depending on your symptoms, additional testing may include:
Blood glucose testing
Complete blood count to evaluate for anemia
Electrolyte and kidney function testing
Electrocardiogram (EKG) to assess heart rhythm
Further evaluation may be recommended if symptoms persist or a heart or neurological condition is suspected.
Simple lifestyle changes may help reduce symptoms:
Stand up slowly, especially after lying down.
Stay adequately hydrated throughout the day.
Eat regular, balanced meals.
Avoid prolonged standing and excessive heat when these trigger symptoms.
Review medications with your healthcare provider.
Sit or lie down immediately if you begin feeling faint.
Increasing salt intake or using compression garments may help certain patients, but these measures should be discussed with a healthcare provider, particularly if you have heart, kidney, or blood pressure conditions.
If you frequently feel dizzy or lightheaded when standing, it may be time for a medical evaluation. Identifying the underlying cause can help prevent falls, fainting, and other complications.
